Shelby McEwen Bio
Shelby McEwen is no stranger to competing at the highest level. Best known as one of the world’s elite high jumpers, the Olympic silver medalist now brings his rare athletic gifts to Dunkman, where his extraordinary elevation makes him one of the most unique athletes in the league.
Born in Oxford, Mississippi, and now residing in Texas, McEwen first dunked at age 13 while attending junior high school. Even then, it was clear that jumping came naturally. Years later, that ability helped him rise to the top of international track and field, culminating in a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Standing 6 foot 3 with a 43-inch standing vertical and the ability to reach nearly 12-feet in the air, McEwen has built his athletic identity around one thing: elevation. His signature dunks include powerful throw downs and a behind the free throw line dunk he completed as a junior in high school. Yet he continues chasing even bigger challenges, including his dream of one day dunking over a truck.
Inspired by legendary moments such as Vince Carter’s famous Olympic dunk over a defender, McEwen views dunking as a platform for creativity and innovation. He believes what separates him from other elite dunkers is his willingness to attempt and learn dunks that have never been done before. His approach is simple: keep pushing boundaries.
McEwen believes fans often focus too much on tricks and not enough on how high athletes actually get off the ground. For him, the best dunks combine style and elevation, creating moments that leave people wondering how they were physically possible.
Much of his motivation comes from his mother, whose support helped shape his journey. Guided by the belief that “Be relentless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire,” McEwen approaches every challenge with the same mindset that carried him to Olympic success.
Now, McEwen enters Dunkman with an opportunity to showcase his talents in an entirely new arena. He sees the league as a chance for the world to discover his passion for dunking while continuing to push the limits of what can be done above the rim. Success, in his eyes, means creating dunks people never thought possible.
When his career is over, McEwen hopes fans look back and say that history was made. He wants to be remembered as an athlete who successfully bridged two worlds, leaving an impact both as an elite high jumper and as a dunker who brought something different to the sport.
